Ingredients You’ll Need

Twix Cookies (3)
  • Butter – Always use unsalted butter in baking to control the amount of added salt.
  • Sugar – You will need some powdered sugar which is the same as icing sugar or confectioners sugar.
  • Vanilla Extract – Use pure vanilla extract for the best flavor.
  • Flour – Simple all-purpose flour is needed for the cookie dough.
  • Salt – A pinch of salt rounds out the sweetness.
  • Caramel Sauce – You can use store-bought caramel, make your own Caramel Sauce, or melt some caramel candy.
  • Chocolate Chips – Traditionally, Twix is made with milk chocolate, but any type of chocolate chips will work. Both semi-sweet chocolate chips and dark chocolate chips are super yummy on these cookies.

How To Make Twix Cookies

These cookies are not only tasty but incredibly easy to make too! I even used a stand mixer to make it even easier. Yet, they can also be made by hand and turn out just as well!

Preheat The Oven And Prep The Pan

To begin, preheat your oven to 350°F (177°C) before you even start making the cookie dough. Then grab a large baking sheet and set it aside. You can use 2 smaller baking sheets if needed. For this recipe, the sheet pans do not need to be greased.

Make The Dough

Twix Cookies (4)

Let’s start the cookie dough! To do so, add the butter to a large bowl or the bowl of your stand mixer and mix it until smooth with your mixer set at medium speed for about 30 seconds. If using a stand mixer, use the paddle attachment. Mix in the vanilla extract, then you’ll want to add the icing sugar and continue mixing until well incorporated. Scrape down the sides of the bowl and combine thoroughly.

Now, add the flour and salt to the butter mixture and continue mixing the dough until it’s fully incorporated.

Form The Cookies

Twix Cookies (6)

Once the dough is made you can start forming the cookies. Just roll the dough out onto a clean work surface until it’s ¼ to ½ inch in thickness. Next, use a 2-inch round cookie cutter to cut the cookie dough out into circles. Then transfer the circles of dough to the ungreased cookie sheet.

Bake The Cookies

Twix Cookies (7)

To bake, transfer the baking sheet to the oven and bake the cookies for 6 to 8 minutes. When they are done they will no longer look glossy and be fully baked on the bottom. Then let the cookies sit on the baking sheet for 5 minutes to set before moving them to a wire rack. You need to let the cookies completely cool before moving on to the next step.

Top With Caramel And Chocolate

Twix Cookies (8)

After the cookies are completely cool, spoon about one tablespoon of caramel sauce onto each cookie and then spread it out. The caramel should almost completely cover the tops of the cookies. Then transfer the caramel topped cookies to the fridge for about 15 minutes so that the caramel can firm up a bit.

To complete the cookies, remove them from the fridge and then spread about one tablespoon of melted chocolate onto each cookie on top of the caramel. Then put the cookies back into the fridge for another 15 minutes to chill so that the chocolate can set.

Is Twix Made Of Shortbread?

Yes! The cookie part of a Twix bar is a layer of shortbread. It’s part of what makes the candy bar so special and what it’s known for.

What Can I Add To These Cookies?

Baking is just not as flexible as cooking. So for the most part when you make any cookie recipe it should not be altered too much. This means that I don’t recommend changing the cookie dough at all. However, you could top the cookies with some chopped nuts, sprinkles, or bits of a Twix bar. Just sprinkle whatever you like on top of the cookies right after you pour on the melted chocolate and then pop them in the fridge to set.

Expert Tips

  1. Room temperature butter. The unsalted butter must be at room temperature to make the cookie dough. Cold butter will not cream together properly with the sugar.
  2. Chill the dough. If the cookie dough is too warm to roll out and cut into circles then you will need to put it in the fridge or freezer to chill for a bit so that it can firm up.
  3. Let the layers set. The caramel and melted chocolate can not be spread on the cookies at the same time. You have to let the caramel layer fully set first before adding the chocolate.

Storage

These Twix cookies are best stored in the fridge in an airtight container or wrapped in plastic wrap for up to a week. Just remove them from the fridge a few minutes before serving to let them come to room temperature. You can also store them in the freezer for up to 4 months and then just let them thaw out for a couple of hours before eating.
