What is a "Bad Layout" (2024)

If you have to walk through the kitchen to get to the basem*nt there are a few things to consider. Is that path outside the kitchen area. Ie do you just enter the room that is the kitchen but you're not walking in front of the stove or sink to get to the the basem*nt then it isn't too bad to have people walking through. Ie they are not interfering with cooking when walking through. However if they have to walk in front of the stove or sink then they'd be in your way when you're cooking so that would be a bad layout. The same thing could apply to the fridge as the stove/sink, but different people have different tolerances for that as you don't tend to stand with the fridge open for long periods of time. However if there is a lot of back and forth then it could become irritating.

As to the dining room that really depends on how you'd be walking by the table. Is it a long way around or just something you pass by and is off to the side. If it is off to the side and a straight path then to me it wouldn't be a big deal as it could just as well, if you had more room, been made into a hallway and not part of the dining. However if you have to walk around furniture to get through it then it would be considered a bad layout.

Generally consider a good layout where you have to make small efforts to get to what you need and furniture can be placed easily without blocking things and allow the room to work for your family. A bad layout is when you have to walk around multiple things to get to spaces and furniture has to be placed so it is blocking items just so you can have enough seating for your family etc. and makes it cramped when you do have to walk to get to something.

There is a lot to it than the above, but that is a good start for when looking at a house and something you can pay attention to if it is furnished.
