The MCU's Hulk vs Thanos Fight Was Disappointing (& Misleading)
Thanos and Hulk have clashed several times in Marvel lore, with Thanos even admitting he was scared to face the Hulk before acquiring the Infinity Stones. While Thanos is usually the victor, it's generally down to him using superior tactics and technology, rather than simply possessing greater physical strength. However, when the two clashed in Infinity War, Thanos beat Hulk in a wildly one-sided fight. After being ambushed by the Green Goliath, Thanos takes a few moments to really enter combat, but then beats Hulk to a pulp, giving no ground. It was a surprising and disappointing loss for Hulk, used to build up the immense threat of Thanos in the movies. However, it also damaged Hulk's reputation with mainstream fans, who left the movie assuming that in Marvel lore, Thanos is far stronger than Hulk.
The Illuminati's Anti-Thanos Weapon Is the Perfect Choice
Thankfully, the Illuminati think differently, and Thanos #2 will bring fans a rematch. It's already clear that Thanos won't score the easy victory fans saw in the MCU, as the cover showcases a truly epic face-off, with Hulk as the larger combatant. The solicit also reveals that Thanos' new attack on Earth and the Illuminati is in service of his renewed interest in Death, explaining why he's back so soon after his humiliating defeat at the hands of the Eternals.
Hulk vs Thanos Deserves This Level of Spectacle
As a superstrong scientific genius with advanced technology and eldritch powers, Thanos is inarguably one of Marvel's most powerful villains, however there's little benefit in making him physically stronger than anyone else in existence. Thanos is a tactician who brings the right tools to the right fight, playing chess against his foes on a cosmic scale. He's impressive precisely because he can take on even more powerful foes and win. In contrast, Hulk pays for his unsurpassable strength with a lack of control. Marvel's strongest being is also its least dependable, lending a narrative balance to the wider universe where 'strongest' doesn't always mean 'best.'
Thanos crushing Hulk in a physical fight was an easy way to show his power as the big bad of the MCU, but it's far less compelling in an ongoing universe where both have been around for over 50 years. Thankfully, this upcoming comic clash seems set to treat Hulk vs Thanos as the 'anyone could win' battle of the ages it should be, as the Illuminati unleash the one hero who could conceivably beat the Mad Titan single-handed.
