i was about to say I wouldn't hesitate, then i saw "pregnant" - not worth taking the risk.

Report

I would eat it, the amount of sugar that is in it would preserve it surely.

FamiliesShareGerms · 27/01/2015 22:03

I'd eat it cooked until it's as hot as a volcano

Very pregnant - crack on. But don't blame us

Is it "Use by" or "Best before"?

Sid77 · 27/01/2015 22:06

I'd imagine that a sticky toffee pudding would have enough sugar in it to preserve it for years. Heat it and eat it - and enjoy

Report

Discopanda · 27/01/2015 22:06

I have to reheat it anyway so surely it'll smell off if it's turned right?

Just eat it, it will be fine, heat it extra hot!

Report

RaggyAnnie · 27/01/2015 22:10

Get it eaten.

SwedishEdith · 27/01/2015 22:12

It won't be off. Sugar and fruit means it's basically jam. Want one now.

Eat it, it'll be fine

Does it say use by, or best before, there is a big difference in the two?

Report

pourmeanotherglass · 27/01/2015 22:16

If its off, you would tell by taste/smell.

As others have said, with all that sugar, its probably fine.

Report

Discopanda · 27/01/2015 22:21

It smells fine, looks fine and on checking the nutritional info is around 40% sugar so I'm guessing it's fine.

Just what I was going to ask ineedsomeinspiration

If it's a best before I would eat it without a second thought.

If it's a use by I would be more cautious. Use by in desserts generally means it has fresh ingredients, like cream, that will spoil.

Even use by can be taken a bit more lightly with some foods - I worked in food manufacture and there is still an in built tolerance on ingredients. I wouldn't be quite so lax with chicken/raw produce but a dessert with no fresh cream on it which has been cooked once before and stored then reheated properly would almost certainly be ok.

I would have eaten it. Did you? FIL used to work in a factory which made things like this, and he says that manufacturers are always very cautious with use by dates just to to cover their backs. In reality the food lasts quite a lot longer, sometimes weeks in the case of baby food. Manufacturers just want to sell the food, they aren't actually bothered if you eat it out not! I wouldn't risk it with meat, for example, but in the case of anything processed just have a sniff or a little taste if in doubt.

Eat it OR not...

On a side note, cream is usually good for at least a week after its use by date as long as it's kept in a clean container at the back of the fridge. It just gets thicker. You'll know when cream is off!

I've eaten things which are months out of date and are fine - if it looks and smells fine, then tastes fine when you try it then its ok
