Here’s what else to consider

Urban planning is the process of designing and managing the physical, social, and economic aspects of cities and regions. It involves making decisions about land use, transportation, infrastructure, housing, public spaces, and environmental quality. Urban planners have a significant role in shaping the future of our planet, as more than half of the world's population lives in urban areas and this proportion is expected to increase. How can urban planners make a positive impact on the environment? Here are some ways they can contribute to sustainable development and reduce the ecological footprint of urbanization.

1 Greening the city

One of the most visible and effective ways urban planners can improve the environmental quality of cities is by increasing the amount and diversity of green spaces. Green spaces, such as parks, gardens, forests, and wetlands, provide multiple benefits for both humans and nature. They enhance the aesthetic appeal and livability of urban areas, offer recreational and educational opportunities, support biodiversity and ecosystem services, reduce air and noise pollution, moderate the urban heat island effect, and sequester carbon. Urban planners can promote greening the city by incorporating green spaces into land use plans, zoning regulations, design guidelines, and incentive programs. They can also collaborate with other stakeholders, such as community groups, businesses, and environmental organizations, to create and maintain green spaces.

Urban planners play a crucial role in promoting environmental sustainability in cities. By shaping land use plans and overseeing development projects, they have the power to steer urban growth towards environmentally conscious practices.Planners can foster sustainability by incorporating eco-friendly principles into land use plans. This includes preserving sensitive ecosystems, integrating green spaces into urban fabric, and promoting sustainable transportation options.Close scrutiny of development proposals is essential to prevent the loss of green spaces. By carefully evaluating project plans and advocating for environmental safeguards, planners can safeguard precious natural areas.

2 Promoting active and public transportation

Another way urban planners can reduce the environmental impact of cities is by encouraging people to use more active and public modes of transportation, such as walking, cycling, buses, trains, and light rail. Active and public transportation have several advantages over private cars, such as lower greenhouse gas emissions, less energy consumption, less congestion, less road accidents, and more health benefits. Urban planners can foster active and public transportation by designing compact and mixed-use neighborhoods, providing safe and convenient infrastructure and facilities, implementing policies and regulations that favor these modes, and educating and engaging the public about their benefits.

Transportation is a crucial element in urban planning. It facilitates the movement of people and influences changes in demographics, housing, and land use. In my pursuit of a study in Urban Planning, I have found that the design of pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, convenient bike lanes, and safe transit routes is important to encourage more people to use public transportation.

Telecommuting is a vital component in the future of transportation, protecting the environment by reducing commuting emissions, lowering demand for infrastructure expansion (wider roads, parking), mitigating the need for car ownership and maintainance, and can contribute to mitigating urban sprawl.

3 Enhancing resource efficiency

A third way urban planners can make a positive difference for the environment is by improving the efficiency and management of urban resources, such as energy, water, waste, and materials. Resource efficiency means using less resources to achieve the same or better outcomes, while minimizing the negative impacts on the environment and human health. Urban planners can enhance resource efficiency by adopting and enforcing standards and codes that promote energy and water conservation, waste reduction and recycling, and green building practices. They can also support the development and integration of renewable energy sources, such as solar, wind, and biomass, into the urban energy system. Furthermore, they can facilitate the transition to a circular economy, where resources are reused, repaired, and regenerated, rather than discarded.

4 Engaging the community

A fourth way urban planners can influence the environmental performance of cities is by engaging the community in the planning process and empowering them to take action. Community engagement is the process of involving and consulting the people who are affected by or interested in urban planning issues and decisions. It helps to ensure that the planning outcomes reflect the needs, values, and preferences of the community, as well as increase their awareness, participation, and ownership. Urban planners can engage the community by using various methods and tools, such as surveys, workshops, forums, online platforms, and participatory mapping. They can also support and partner with community initiatives and organizations that aim to improve the environmental quality of their neighborhoods and cities.

5 Adapting to climate change

A fifth way urban planners can contribute to the environmental well-being of cities is by helping them adapt to the impacts of climate change. Climate change is the long-term alteration of the Earth's climate system, caused by human activities that increase the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. It poses significant risks and challenges for urban areas, such as rising sea levels, extreme weather events, heat waves, droughts, floods, and diseases. Urban planners can help cities adapt to climate change by assessing their vulnerability and resilience, developing and implementing adaptation plans and strategies, and monitoring and evaluating their effectiveness. They can also integrate adaptation measures into other aspects of urban planning, such as land use, transportation, infrastructure, and housing.

6 Collaborating with other disciplines

A sixth way urban planners can have a positive impact on the environment is by collaborating with other disciplines and sectors that are involved in or affected by urban planning. Urban planning is a complex and interdisciplinary field that requires the knowledge, skills, and perspectives of various professionals and experts, such as architects, engineers, geographers, economists, sociologists, ecologists, and public health specialists. Urban planners can collaborate with other disciplines by establishing and maintaining communication and coordination channels, sharing information and data, seeking and providing feedback, and working together on common projects and goals. They can also learn from and adopt best practices and innovations from other fields that can enhance the environmental sustainability of urban planning.

Public schools are the second most expensive piece of infrastructure (after roads/highways/expressways) a community will invest in. School planning and design, through land-use, directly impacts urban planning and development. A deliberate effort by urban planners to connect and collaborate with public schools is needed to try and align local school planning with urban planning. The ongoing siloing of school planning from urban planning is no longer socially, economically, or environmentally sustainable. Moreover, urban planning may want to examine classical "environmental design" principles as part of modern urban planning practice. Finally, stronger connections between urban planning and public health would benefit both professions.

One thing I've found helpful is the use of available data in making informed decisions so as to promote sustainable urban governance and decision making. The use of spatial data is key in making decisions that affect the urban populace. Urban security and other related vices can be curbed to the barest minimum using spatial analysis and data.
