MINNEAPOLIS — Minneapolis, along with other major cities across the U.S., saw a spike in homicide rates since the pandemic.
But the trend may be starting to reverse both here and nationwide, according to a WalletHub.
Homicide rates fell by an average of about 5 percent in 40 of the most populated U.S. cities between Q1 2021 and Q2 2023.

Minneapolis saw 5.41 homicides per 100,000 residents in Q2 of 2023, the study found. That's down 0.94 from Q2 2022. It's also down 2.59 from Q1 2021 when the spike in homicides peaked.

Of the 40 cities WalletHub studied, these 10 had the highest homicide rates in Q2 2023. All numbers out per 100,000 residents.
- St. Louis: 16.18
- Memphis: 11.20
- Detroit: 10.69
- New Orleans: 10.42
- Washington, DC: 8.78
- Richmond, VA: 7.53
- Atlanta: 7.11
- Kansas City: 6.96
- Chicago: 6.82
- Philadelphia: 5.7
While out of the top ten, Minneapolis' murder rate isn't far behind. The City of Lakes' has the 12th-highest homicide rate out of the cities profiled.
Meanwhile, St. Paul ranked 39th on the list, with a Q2 2023 homicide rate of .32.
